Known as the Oscars for Tourism, the World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to celebrate the excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries. It is recognized as the “ultimate hallmark of industry excellence”
This year it celebrates it 24th anniversary. It covers the whole world and the industry’s biggest heads, trade and consumer media, attend its annual gala. Winners are announced every December.
Ecuador is no stranger to winning these recognitions and has consistently won every year in various categories; taking home, sort of speak, several awards each year. Last year (2016) for example Ecuador took 8 awards, best of them all Quito was voted as the Leading Destination in South America for the 4th time.
Other awards were leading airport (Quito), Leading business destination (Guayaquil), Best green hotel (Eco Hotel Ecuador), Best hotel boutique (Hotel Plaza Grande and Casa Gangotena, Quito) Leading Resort (Arasha Tropical Forest & Spa), Best Luxury Train in South America, and many more.

Last year, the best cruise award went to Anakonda Amazon Cruise, you guessed it, from Ecuador.

The capital city of Quito has taken the award for South America’s Leading Destination for four straight years since 2013.
