The Galápagos Islands are located on the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) west of the mainland. Ecuador covers an area of 276,841 square kilometers of land and counts with an approximate population of 15,300,000, representing a population density of 55 habitants per km2.
The official language spoken in Ecuador is Spanish; however, there are a number of recognized Amerindian languages used by the different indigenous groups native to Ecuador. The second most spoken language in Ecuador is the Kichwa.
Ecuador became an independent state in 1830, after gaining its sovereignty from Spain, and since the year 2000, the country adopted the US Dollar (USD) as its official currency. The Equator crosses through the northern part of the country, roughly 30 km north of Quito.
Ecuador has the world’s first and second UNESCO World Heritage Sites, designated in 1978. Site #1 is the Galápagos Islands and #2 is the city of Quito. Quito is the capital city of Ecuador and has a population of 1,399,814 and is located 2854 meters above sea level. Yet, the largest city in the country is Guayaquil with a population of 1,952,029 and is located on the Pacific coast at an elevation of 6 meters above sea level. Cuenca is the third largest city with a population of 276,964 located 2543 meters above sea level.
